Have you ever heard of a link between biotin and hair loss? Today we want to examine the what biotin is a why biotin is important for hair growth. That’s because there is a proliferation of biotin products on the market today and there is a link between low levels of biotin and hair loss.
So what exactly is biotin and what does it have to do with hair growth? Biotin is vitamin B 7. It was isolated in 1936 and is a water soluble B group vitamin. It is found in a variety of foods and is also manufactured by the body in the intestine. It is very important to cell growth and to the metabolism of fatty acids. It allows your body to process fats, carbohydrates and proteins into energy. And it has an effect on the health of your hair because of its role in the metabolism of skalp oils.
Those who are deficient in biotin exhibit a range of symptoms including hair loss which can even include loss of eyebrows in severe cases. Some people even use biotin for hair discoloration such as hair greying as biotin is said to reduce greying of the hair.
If you’re experiencing hair loss, biotin supplements may or may not provide some relief. Whilst it seems there is a biotin hair loss link it is not yet clear that biotin, taken as a supplement on its own, is sufficient to start to restore hair growth. However it does seem that biotin has a role in hair health and this reason taking biotin together with other nutrients essential to hair growth as part of a total hair restoration treatment is well worthwhile.
We mentioned a total hair restoration treatment. If you’re looking for biotin products to treat your hair loss you need to consider a much wider solution you need to find one which attacks the hair loss problem from a range of different directions including biotin supplementation. There is such a product.

There is one excellent hair loss product that offers its customers a complete range of essential hair nutrients, as oral supplements, including biotin, for hair loss. Along with these essential hair nutrients, however, it also provides a topical application which includes the ingredient minoxidil. Minoxidil was the first hair loss treatment approved by the FDA and is still considered to be the best hair loss treatment.
However it also seems clear that minoxidil on its own does not produce as good a result for hair regrowth as using minoxidil in combination with a range of essential hair nutrients, including biotin. The reason for this is as follows.
The cause of hair loss in most cases is the action of DHT on hair follicles of the scalp. We won’t explain the full mechanism here because we have already done so in our article about DHT blockers. If you’d like to read more about how DHT is most likely the cause of your hair loss then read that article.
But basically the reason the DHT results in hair loss is that it reduces the ability of the hair follicles to absorb essential nutrients. So any approach that increases the ability of the hair to take up nutrients, and at the same time supplies those nutrients, should work.
The best hair restoration treatment includes biotin in a wide range of essential hair nutrients, including biotin, which hair can make proper use when it is better able to take up nutrients and also minoxidil to help improve the ability of the hair to take them up. And it includes some natural products such as Saw Palmetto, which has been shown to reduce the effects of DHT, so that the action of the DHt is suppressed to some degree.
Hopefully that’s allowed you to better understand biotin. Hair growth seems to depend to some extent on biotin but it also seems that biotin supplements on their own are insufficient as a hair restoration treatment.
