You’re a man, starting to get older, your father or grandfather were bald, you’re beginning to wonder about the causes of thinning hair in men. What is it that causes thinning hair and are you likely to find that you too end up with a bald spot just like your dad.

The causes of hair thinning vary from men to women. For men the primary cause of thinning hair is what is known as male pattern baldness. The probably know about this. Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, is an inherited condition that is passed down from your forebears that means that you are genetically more likely to experience thinning of the hair than the average man who does not have male pattern baldness.

However the causes of thinning hair in women are markedly different. Whilst there are women with female pattern baldness it is less common in females than it is in males. One study examining the incidence of pattern baldness and both men and women concluded that pattern baldness will affect 57% of women and 73% of men. Whilst it is well known that androgenetic alopecia is the major cause of thinning hair in men it is less well-known that it is in fact almost as significant a cause of hair thinning in women as well.

Of course there is a huge variation in the degree to which one male or female is affected by pattern baldness compared to another. Some may experience a slight receding of the hairline and no more. Others may lose the major percentage of their hair and end up merely with a ring of hair around the sides and back of the scalp.

How badly you suffer from thinning of the hair depends on a number of factors. One of the major factors for how serious your hair loss will be is the age at which you start thinning. Studies also show that around a quarter of men will start balding before the age of 30 whilst up to two thirds will have thinning hair by the age of 60. Statistically your chances of getting male pattern baldness are 4 in 7.

Whilst male pattern baldness is the major cause of thinning hair in men there are a number of other causes of hair loss as well. Poor diet, particularly the western diet which is usually high in red meat, can cause loss of hair. There is a range of medical conditions that can cause loss of hair and stress can even have the same effect. Often if the condition is caused by stress, the hair will begin to return after the stressful event is over.

Another cause of hair thinning is various medications. The most well-known of these is chemotherapy. But chemotherapy is not the only medication that can lead to hair thinning.

Those are the major causes of thinning hair in men. The next question is, if you are starting to notice your hair thinning, what you do about it?
Causes Of Thinning Hair In Men

The first thing to do is to consult your doctor. You should immediately eliminate the possibility of medical condition causing your hair loss and, if you are suffering from a medical condition, have it treated as soon as possible. Often a successful treatment for the condition will result in a return of hair growth. Hopefully are you are given any medications by your doctor that are likely to cause hair loss your doctor will warn you about this and you can discuss the likelihood of this occurring and also steps you can take to minimize it.

However as you can see from the figures that we have previously given the likely cause of your hair loss is male pattern baldness. Lets consider male pattern baldness a little more.

Those who suffer from this genetically inherited condition may be pleased to know that whilst they are suffering from hair loss this is an indication of powerful levels of male sex hormones in their body. The cause of hair loss in those who suffer from male pattern baldness relates to the levels in the body of a sex hormone called DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). DHT is a sex hormone derived from the well-known male hormone testosterone.

It is well known that males who have been desexed in some way, for example eunuchs and men who have suffered damage to the testes, will not experience hair loss even though they are genetically predisposed to it. A genetic predisposition is only part of the equation. As well as the predisposition it is also an essential step in the process that the man develops a significant supply of DHT. This cannot happen if the man is unable to produce testosterone for any reason.

As the male body produces excess DHT this attaches to their hair follicles and reduces the ability of the hair follicle to absorb essential nutrients that the hair needs to be healthy. In effect the DHT strangles the hair follicle by depriving it of nutrients and this leads to gradual weakening of the hair follicle and an inability of the hair follicle to reproduce.

Now that you know the causes of thinning hair in men you need to know what to do if you suspect that you to will be subject to male pattern baldness. The good news is that once the mechanism of hair loss was understood science was able to produce a cure. The first hair loss treatment approved by the FDA is called minoxidil. Minoxidil has been proven to restore hair growth in a large percentage of men subject to male pattern baldness. Like all of these things it will not work perfectly for everyone but it has been shown to work effectively for most.

Whilst minoxidil will result in some improvements to hair growth there is now a more effective hair restoration treatment which involves the use of minoxidil together with a range of other vitamins and minerals. The principle is that if DHT strangles the hair follicle by reducing its ability to absorb nutrients then improving the ability of the hair to take in nutrients together with supplying those nutrients should lead to hair regrowth.

One revolutionary new product called Provillus does exactly this. It utilises the effects of minoxidil to increase the blood supply to hair follicles whilst at the same time providing all the nutrients that hair needs for good hair health. This two-pronged approach works better than using minoxidil on its. And it includes natural products such as Saw Palmetto to that has been shown to reduce the effects of the DHT.

Whilst there are a range of causes of hair thinning in men male pattern baldness is by far the most common and if you’re experiencing some hair loss chances are very high that this is why. Remember to ask your doctor about it the next time you visit but expect to be told that you have inherited the gene which may lead to hair loss. Read the rest of this entry

Hairloss. Anyone who doesn’t suffer from it doesn’t know how upsetting it can be. Hairloss, or what is strictly known as alopecia, can be a cause of quite some distress in so many people. Lets consider hairloss causes, and what can be done about it.

There is quite a wide range of different causes of hairloss, or causes of thinning hair. Some are self-inflicted, some are genetic and some are just plain bad luck. And hormonal hair loss is very commonplace. So today will consider some of the more common, and some of the less common, causes of thinning hair.

And of course hairloss causes will also vary from men to women. For example women can be very prone to hair loss from stress. There is a wide range of stressful life situations that can cause what is technically known as telogen effluvium, or hair loss caused by stress. Women can also suffer from a range of hormonal conditions throughout their life, some of which may also lead to hair loss. For example an overactive or under active thyroid gland can create hormonal changes which will lead in some cases to a loss of hair or gradual thinning of hair.

And for women one of the most common causes of hair loss can be hormonal changes experienced during menopause. It is estimated that up to half of all women can suffer some thinning of their hair during menopause. It causes can be different. Men more commonly suffer from what is called male pattern baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia). This is usually an inherited genetic condition and can result in a significant amount of hair loss. Women too can suffer from pattern baldness however this is less common.

One of the major factors involved in male pattern baldness relates to the effects of Dihydrotestostrone, or DHT. Dihydrotestostrone is a hormonal byproduct of testosterone however in men prone to male pattern baldness you can lead to the start of this condition. One of the main reasons why DHT leads to hair loss is that it can attach itself to their hair follicles and prevent essential vitamins and minerals from reaching the follicles.
Hairloss Causes

As proper nutrition is essential to healthy hair growth anything prevents the full amount of nutrients reaching the follicles will start to cause a reduction in hair follicle health.

As DHT attaches itself to hair follicles the follicles gradually shrink in size and their hair strand gets finer. This is what is called miniaturization. It is estimated that up to 95 percent of genetic hair loss is caused by the action of DHT.

Those who lose more hair than others are those who are predisposed to producing more DHT than others.

If the production of DHT is responsible for hair loss and thinning hair to such a degree what can be done about it? There is one particularly effective product that has been approved by the FDA for treatment of hair loss caused by DHT and which has been proven very successful.

Minoxidil was the first product approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness and has been shown in many studies to be effective in most cases. Minoxidil was actually a drug designed to treat high blood pressure however it was found that uses of Minoxidil tended to grow hair to a greater degree than would be expected. This reason the study is a hair loss treatment and found to be highly successful.

There are a number of products on the market that use Minoxidil as the active ingredient. In our view the most successful of these is Provillus. The reason for this is that together with the active ingredient Minoxidil they also include a range of other ingredients in their product that are essential for proper hair nutrition. As we previously mentioned one of the major causes of hair loss is the effect of DHT in preventing proper hair nutrition and therefore limiting the effects of DHT is only part of the equation. It is also essential to provide full range of hair nutrition and the products manufactured by Provillus do that very well.

So if you suffer from hairloss, particularly inherited hair loss, it’s important for you to tackle the problem as soon as possible. The more hair you lose the harder it is to grow it back, and if you’re left with a circle on hair and a large bald patch it may well be too late. Read the rest of this entry
