OR READ OUR ARTICLE BELOW.

Today we would like to discuss whether there is a hair loss vitamin deficiency link, or whether using vitamins for hair loss is worthwhile.

It does seem that the average American diet low in fresh fruit and vegetables and essential vitamins and minerals and high in sugar, salt and animal proteins is not ideal for the health of our hair. Research shows that there is a link between poor diet and hair loss just as there is a link between poor diet and other health concerns. However it is difficult to pin down the exact missing ingredients in the average American diet and to produce dietary recommendations that will result in reversal of hair loss.

Obviously everyone’s diet is slightly different however as a general rule in the US our diet contributes to a wide range of health concerns. We eat far too much processed foods and fast foods, drink too much alcohol and eat too much sugar and salt. As a general rule these foods are low in essential vitamins and minerals and high in other substances that are not good for us. It is quite clear that this diet promotes health problems and it would seem logical that there is a clear diet hair loss link.

And it even seems that those amongst us who are seeking to improve our health may also be contributing to dietary hair loss. For example fad diets designed to help us lose weight are often low in essential vitamins and other nutrients as well and these may well also contribute to dietary hairloss problems.

Just like other parts of our body our hair needs a wide range of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients and where these are deficient the hair will become unhealthy. Hair loss through vitamin deficiency occurs because the hair becomes weaker, thinner and will fall out earlier. And whilst normal healthy hair is usually replaced with new hair this is not always the case for hair which has been subject to vitamin deficiency.

It is reasonably well known that using vitamins for hair loss can work to improve hair health. However to extrapolate from that to provide specific dietary recommendations is not so easy. As a general rule however it is fair to say that changing your diet from an average American diet to a diet much higher in fresh fruit and vegetables and much lower in sugar, salt and meat should provide a much more adequate range of vitamins and minerals and other nutrients to your hair.

But ultimately the cause of the vast majority of hair loss, particularly in men, is male pattern baldness and simply using vitamins for hair loss caused by male pattern baldness is unlikely to restore you to a full head of hair if that is what is causing your advancing balding. This is because the mechanism by which male pattern baldness operates is the male sex hormone DHT which limits the ability of the hair follicle to absorb essential nutrients. Therefore simply providing an increased supply of essential nutrients does not attacked the root cause of the problem. The hair cannot take up the nutrients.

Of course that does not mean that you shouldn’t make efforts to improve your diet. Hair loss may well slow if you do so but, if you suffer from pattern baldness, called androgenetic alopecia, this will merely delay the onset of the problem. If you have male pattern baldness causing hair loss vitamin deficiency is only part of the problem.

There are now products available which attack this problem from 2 different angles. One product in particular, called Provillus, provides a wide range of essential vitamins and minerals together with other natural plant substances such as Saw Palmetto which has been shown to limit the effects of DHT thereby improving the ability of the hair to absorb essential nutrients. This is combined with a topical application of the well-known hair restoration product called minoxidil. Minoxidil improves blood circulation to the hair follicles which also improves the ability of the hair follicles to absorb essential nutrients.

Whilst it is clear that there is a clear hair loss vitamin deficiency link reversing your hair loss by dietary changes can be very difficult. Male pattern baldness will not reverse purely from changes in diet.

Whilst it does not work for everybody there are very encouraging results from those using Provillus because it not only provides essential hair nutrients but also acts to reduce the effects of the DHT as well is improving the ability of hair follicles to absorb the essential nutrients provided. This is a far more wide ranging approach to using vitamins for hair loss than simply improving your diet.

However we ought also recommend that if you eat the average American diet you make some significant changes to that. There is no doubt that our diet, in many cases, is killing us. Whilst it may be worthwhile to restore our hair growth it is far more serious to suffer from heart disease, for example, because we have lived on pizza and burgers. There are powerful reasons to improve our diet and one of them is to improve the health of our hair.
